Review For The Royal Children. 5th November. Submitted by Mr Steve Rhodes
Stepping into a subdued bar, having walked down Derby Road from Canning Circus to a cacophony of bangs and rainbow colours cascading the sky (no, I wasn't, it was bonfire night) past sparsely populated cafes & pubs, I feared a quiet time for me and the Band. Well, gradually, more folk entered and stayed, and around 09:30 Bad Whiskey opened up with a solid version of Demons Eye, with some strident work from the rhythm section and keyboards, accompanied by soulful vocals and complex guitar work that deserved a bit more volume - this was later rectified.
My personal favourites from a great first set were, Superstitious - most reminiscent of the Beck,Bogart, Appice version (Stevie Wonder wrote the song for Jeff) - funky and growling, The Letter, with vocals Joe C would have admired and a rocking rendition of Out of Control written by that Blues stalwart Walter Trout. The bar was now far busier and the customers were sticking with the music. Unfortunately, being a sad, and tired, old sod - a day/'s painting and gardening had taken it's toll - I had to leave, missing the 2nd set, and catch the bus home for a nice cup of cocoa. Now that's real rock & roll! I'm looking forward to seeing more Bad Whiskey - bring it on.
We were delighted to welcome /" Bad Whiskey/" to the Rose and Crown on Nov 26th of this year. The band had been eagerly anticipated after having to unfortunately cancel their original first gig.....and they didn/'t disappoint !!! The sound was tight, the clarity spot on, and the range of songs they covered was both refreshing and familliar at the same time ! The use of the large bongo/'s ( for want of a better word) was a brilliant addition, and the skilfully played Harmonica left many of the audience wanting more ! The bluesy twist running through the sets was a breath of fresh air, and earmarked /"Bad Whiskey/" as a stand out band, certainly for ourselves, and judging by the response from our customers, the feeling was mutual ! This is one band we will be absolutely delighted to see return, and anyone who gets the chance to see these guys really should make the effort to support them, bands like /"Bad Whiskey/" are becoming a rareity !! Thank you guys, for an excellent night, and here/'s to many more ! Steve and Nikki Smith
