Kev Gilroy
Married three kids, three grandkids and grand dog called Nigel. Resident – Shardlow South Derbyshire Occupation – Drummer Hobby – Quality Dude for a Small engineering company in Derby Influences – all Delta blues, Buddy Rich, Kenny Clare, Mitch Mitchell. Hendrix, SRV, Mike Whellans (check YouTube) Tull, Purple, Bad Company, Bad Whiskey. Kev has been drumming for many a year – since he was 15. First gig was a resident band at the Newcastle Airport Hotel – age 16. Playing 4 nights a week with “the Milwaukee Special earned him £3 per gig. Not bad for a £10. 1950’s Premier three piece kit. The band then travelled the North-East club circuit for 3 years – nice little earner. Allowed upgrade to 4 piece Premier Kenny Clare kit (popsicle purple) and Avedis Zildjan cymbals – brilliant kit . Kev went on to bass guitar for a couple of years with another club band – Sundown. Famously introduced to the stage of the Scotswood Social club by the then MC Gypsy Jim – “just back from a tour of Australia – The Sundowners” – they looked like 4 pints of milk. Tried a year in an acoustic duo with his pal Jim Greenall, included a very brief tour of London. Went back on the drums in ’78 and passed an audition with brilliant Newcastle singer Micky Whittaker. Set up to play Radio Metro tent at Newcastle Exhibition – but it never came off. Great experience though. Bit of a gap as he got in the way as his wife Trish brought up the family in Rugby, Wark’s. Then a move to Scotland in late 80’s saw him kitted up to play in a well known 60’s band – B470. Lots of club pub and wedding do’s. Then came the big one, a three piece called Lo-Yo-Yo. Jim, Cowboy and Kev travelled all over Scotland with a much appreciated blues rock band. As far south as Newcastle and up to Elgin, across to The Isle of Islay, and a few hundred gigs in the South of Scotland. Should have been highlighted by playing support for Fish ex-Marrillion, but he proved to be a right git. Met some great musicians though. Then another spell on bass with a bunch of incredible musicians– Rubizakan. Brief spell touring the South and West of Scotland before work commitments curtailed this. Kevs last gigs in Scotland saw him back with Jim and Cowboy in a great three piece – Ambajack. Kev was depping for the Jacks drummer Kev Hyslop, who had been ill for some time. Sadly the brilliant Mr Hyslop never played for the Jack again, we lost him in 2005. Now having moved down to Derby to work for a small engineering outfit (RR) Kev relishes the challenge of playing with the Whiskey. Never having been a “solo” type drummer Black Knight, Superstition and Rader Love are helping him ~”up his game”. Great fun and long may it last. Gear Now use Ludwig (Cheap, China, Cheerful) for rehearsal and a lovely Black Nickel Tama Superstar Hyperdrive for gigs. All Tama hardware, plus a 60’s Rogers Dynasonic snare for recording and odd gigs. Sabian main Cymbals with Paste and Stagg secondary. That was just for all geek drummers – like me. ?
